100 years of Chilehaus

The Chilehaus is one of the most famous buildings in Germany and one of Hamburg's most prestigious addresses. It is located in the Kontorhaus district, directly opposite the Speicherstadt warehouse district. The striking tip of the building, which is reminiscent of the bow of a ship, has the sharpest facade angle in Europe. With its ten storeys, the Chilehaus is also one of Hamburg's first high-rise buildings.

Quotes from the guests of honour on Chilehaus

The Chilehaus story - 100 years of a Hamburg legend

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Hamburg architectural icon, the owner, Union Investment, commissioned historian and author Michael Batz to write a book about the Chilehaus. It was published by Dölling und Galitz Verlag on 28 May 2024 and is available in bookshops (only in German language).

Since 2015, the Chilehaus, Hamburg's impressive landmark, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Speicherstadt warehouse complex. The expressionist brick building, designed by architect Fritz Höger, is the most famous office building in Germany and is still considered a milestone in architectural history today. It was built between 1922 and 1924 on behalf of Henry B. Sloman, a wealthy "saltpetre baron" from colonial Chile, and characterises the cityscape with its innovative design and the striking ship's arch spire, which stands for modern Hanseatic architecture. To mark the 100th anniversary, Michael Batz has for the first time compiled a chronology of its use based on documentary research. The result is a well-founded and captivating portrait of the century-old building from the inside. Batz provides insights into urban development policy since the demolition of Hamburg's former historic city centre and collects fascinating stories about the companies and people who often lived in the building for decades. Architectural historian Gert Kähler provides an overview of the building's history.
